Three sick calls tonight and no float pool. I was fully expecting the usual 'do your best' email.
Instead our manager shows up at 1900 in scrubs and takes a full assignment. Didn't hide in the office, didn't hover at the desk. She answered call lights, cleaned up a GI bleed, and passed meds all night like she'd never left the floor. Around 0400 she asked what would actually help us long term, and she wrote it down.
I've been on this unit six years and I've had four managers. This is the first one I'd follow somewhere else. I don't know if it'll last or if admin will burn her out too. Has anyone else had a manager who actually got it? What made them different?

Post replyWriting it down is the easy part. Did she give any kind of timeline for following up? That's usually where I find out if a manager means it or just had a good night.
Six years and four managers might be the most relatable thing I've read all week.
Respect to her, but I get uneasy when a manager covering a full assignment gets treated as the win. Now the staffing numbers look fine on paper and nobody upstairs has to fix anything. What did she do with that list?
Had one like this about five years ago. She'd come in on nights with no notice just to see what we were dealing with, and she fought for a second tech until she got it. Admin pushed her out after 18 months for being 'too staff-focused.' Enjoy her while you have her and tell her director what she did.
